#1 D. Eisenhower (1959)
More than 60 years ago, President of the United States Dwight Eisenhower visited India in 1959. This was the first visit of an American President to India. During this time he addressed a public meeting at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi and also went to see the Taj Mahal. The Prime Minister of India at that time was Jawaharlal Nehru.
#2 Richard Nixon (1969)
Richard Nixon was the second US President to visit India. Richard Nixon came to India in 1969. His India tour was part of the Asian tour. However, he spent only 22 hours in the country. This was due to the talk of his relations with the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Nixon traveled from India to Lahore, where he received a grand reception. Two years after this tour, the US stood with Pakistan in the 1971 war.

Nixon’s visit came nearly nine years after 1978’s then US President Jimmy Carter visited India. During his visit, he visited a village near Delhi and gave a television set as a gift. Later this village was named Carterpuri. At that time the Prime Minister of the country was Morarji Desai.

After a gap of more than 20 years, Bill Clinton visited India in 2000 during the tenure of then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. This was the first visit of the US President to India in more than 20 years. The US supported India in the Kargil war (1999) before this trip. This was the first time America had taken the side of India.
