PM Modi set to announce Lock Down Increase to 03 May 2020

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced the extension of the nationwide lockdown to 3 May to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 21-day lockdown, effective 25 March, was to end today.

As both lives and livelihoods become the focus of tackling the coronavirus pandemic in a coordinated effort by center and states, the lockdown has been extended.

States had asked for the extension of the lockdown and some states had already extended it, Modi said in a televised address to the nation, his third address to the nation in the last one month apart from one video message which he released.

Successful implementation of measures to prevent the pandemic by India has paved the way for the nation’s mindset reset, something that has not been tried on this scale for 1.3 billion people in a democratic country.

“Like a disciplined soldier, people are carrying out their duties. I salute them. The Constitution talks about the power of ‘We the People of India’.. this is what it is. Ambedkar’s life gives us inspiration,” Modi said.

“Within the obstacles of this lockdown, the way people are following the rules, the way people are patiently observing the new year is indeed praiseworthy. I pray for happiness in your lives,”

India declared the national lockdown when there were 550 cases and didn’t wait for the problem to expand, he said. In fact, the moment the problem was seen, India made an attempt to stop it.

As of Tuesday, there were 10,363 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in India, out of which 8,988 are active. The pandemic has claimed 339 lives so far.
